These terms govern your use of the Epistemic persona chat service — Satori, Mentat, KatGPT, and Pume. They cover the data we collect, what we do with it, and the disclaimers you should keep in mind whenever you talk to an AI.
( 01 ) — The Agreement
Welcome to Epistemic Labs, Inc. ("Epistemic", "we", "us", or "our"). These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a legally binding agreement between you and Epistemic covering your access to and use of our website, our persona chat service (including Satori, Mentat, KatGPT, and Pume), and any related software, APIs, or content (together, the "Service").

By using the Service you confirm that you are at least 16 years old (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction, whichever is higher). The Service is not directed at children.
Epistemic operates large language model ("LLM") services that let you hold text conversations with AI personas. Each persona has a distinct temperament and area of focus, but all of them are generative AI systems — not humans, and not your employees, advisers, or companions.
We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time, with or without notice. We may also impose limits on usage, including rate limits and message caps, as necessary to keep the Service running.
To provide the Service we collect the following categories of personal data:
We collect this data for the legitimate purposes of operating the Service, improving our models, preventing abuse, and complying with legal obligations. We do not sell your personal data.
We use your personal data to deliver the Service, respond to your requests, maintain security, diagnose and fix errors, and improve the quality of our personas. We may use de-identified or aggregated data for analytics, research, and product development without further notice to you.
To generate responses, your chat messages are processed by our inference infrastructure and by third-party model providers we engage. These providers process your messages on our behalf solely to produce responses and are contractually obligated to protect the data.
Chat messages and associated metadata are stored on our infrastructure and may be retained in server logs for diagnostic and quality-control purposes. We keep signup information for as long as your account remains active and delete or anonymize it when you request deletion, unless we are legally required to retain it.
We use industry-standard safeguards, including encryption in transit, access controls, and monitoring. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Important: do not share sensitive personal data — health, financial, or otherwise — in chat. We do not build a confidential-adviser relationship with you, and chat content is not covered by professional confidentiality protections.
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact us at the address below. We will respond within the timeframes required by applicable law.
You retain ownership of the messages you submit. By submitting messages, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, process, and store that content to operate and improve the Service. This license is necessary for the Service to function at all.
You represent that your messages do not infringe the rights of any third party and that you have the authority to grant the license above. You are solely responsible for the content you submit.
Personas are generative AI. They can hallucinate — producing confident, fluent statements that are false, outdated, or invented — and they may reflect biases present in their training data. Nothing a persona says is a verified fact, a promise, or advice tailored to you.
You are responsible for evaluating the accuracy of any output before acting on it. For critical matters — medical, legal, financial, safety, or otherwise — consult a qualified professional. The Service is provided for informational and entertainment purposes only.
Nothing in the Service constitutes professional, medical, legal, financial, or tax advice. Pume's business suggestions, Mentat's plans, and any other persona output are illustrative only. Do not make consequential decisions based on a persona's response without independent verification.
You agree not to use the Service to:
We may suspend or terminate access for conduct we reasonably determine violates these Terms.
The Service, including its software, branding, persona names, artwork, and design, is owned by Epistemic or its licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, revocable license to use the Service for its intended purpose. Output generated by the Service is licensed to you for your use, subject to these Terms.
The Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, express or implied — including warranties of accuracy, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that outputs will be correct, complete, or reliable.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Epistemic and its affiliates, officers, employees, and providers shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of — or inability to use — the Service. Our total aggregate liability for any claim shall not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim, or one hundred US dollars.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Epistemic and its personnel from any claims, damages, or expenses arising out of your use of the Service, your content, or your violation of these Terms.
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without cause or notice. Upon termination, licenses granted under these Terms end, though sections intended to survive — such as disclaimers, limitations of liability, and governing law — will continue to apply. You may stop using the Service at any time and request deletion of your data as described above.
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page and, where required, notify you. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any disputes arising from these Terms shall be resolved in the courts of Delaware, and you consent to their jurisdiction.
